Investigations on innovative reactors without the possibility of meltdowns

The main demand on reactor safety is to prove the guaranteed retention of the fission product inventory of nuclear plants, even in the course of assumed extreme incidents. Ideally, the retention of the fission products happens in the fuel elements themselves. Thus, these meltdown-free reactors are qualified to fulfill the fundamental demands excellently.

Objective of the project:

Conceptional investigations on the feasibility of a heavy-water-cooled pressurised water reactor with spherical fuel elements incapable of meltdown ( loss of coolant incident and failure of all active systems is postulated).
